Disaster Averted In Jos As Truck Brakes Fail

What could have been a fatal accident in Jos, Plateau State that could have resulted in several deaths was averted on Saturday evening as a truck lost control at an intersection in the Plateau State capital. The truck, according to eyewitnesses, lost control due to break failure before reaching the intersection and in the process hit two tricycles and two vehicles with the driver of the truck and two others sustaining injuries. According to eyewitness, the truck, loaded with dog feed from the Grand Cereals factory was heading towards the city centre, but lost control before the interjection. No human was hit as a result, as most people were either in their shops or not close to where it happened. One of the passengers of the truck, Joseph Daniel, who was in the truck alongside three others, narrated to Channels Television what happened. A horrified customer claims to have discovered this REAL chicken's head in their takeaway chicken wings meal. The image of the bird, which appears to have been deep fried, was posted online. The poster claims that the food was served at a "Quick" restaurant in France - and brands it "disgusting". Nearly 20,000 people have viewed the LiveLeak clip since it was posted yesterday. One person commented: "Disgusting - and they served it? Someone should get fired."

Tragedy occurred in Kaduna as three people died and 10 vehicles were burnt when a filling station belonging to the state-owned Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation caught fire on Saturday. Some residents of Kinkinau GRA, where the fuel station is located, opposite Ungwan Muazu, on Nnamdi Azikwe Way, said said the fire started around 5:11 p.m and raged for more than three hours adding that they became apprehensive that it might spread to their shops and homes. Babangida Kinkinau, owner of a nearby shop, said the incident occurred while a fuel tanker was discharging its content. “One of the compartments of the tanker was leaking fuel while in the process of discharge,” Mr. Kinkinau said. “I rushed to the scene with a bucket to assist as the manager of the fuel station uses rag to block the leakage. “Unfortunately, the fire was triggered from the fuel that flowed to the main road, which engulfed eight cars and two commercial buses on queue. The Lagos State Government at the weekend released a White Paper on the report of the Tribunal of Inquiry into causes of civil disturbances at the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ), just as it reiterated its commitment to ensuring free access for investors not just in the area but also in other parts of the state. According to a statement signed by the State’s Commissioner for Information & Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, the State Government accepted most of the recommendations of the Tribunal part of which included a directive asking that the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase be requested through the State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, to take over investigation into the gruesome killing of Managing Director of Lekki Worldwide Limited Alhaji Tajudeen Disu as a fallout of the unrest. Nigerian troops at early hours of Sunday ambushed suspected Boko Haram terrorists escaping from Sambisa forest to Fulawani village during which five members of the insurgent group were killed, Colonel Sani Usman, acting Director, Army Public Relations said in a statement. The fleeing terrorists, ambushed by troops of 81 Battalion and some elements of 251 Task Force Battalion, 25 Brigade, according to him, were trying to link up with other terrorists or members of their families to relocate to other places. Colonel Usman recalled that the troops had yesterday intercepted a group of women and children who claimed to have escaped from the terrorists enclave in Sambisa forest. But he said during screening and interrogation, it was confirmed that they were the terrorists’ advance party relocating to a new safe haven following intense tactical operations by troops.

Herdsmen cause auto crash in Ogun, two dead

Two persons died early Sunday morning after a truck crushed a herdsman in Ogun state in an accident which occurred at Obada Oko area along the old Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, Abeokuta. The accident involved two trucks, a green coloured Austin Tipper truck with registration number (LAGOS) KJA168 XP and a wine coloured DAF truck marked (OGUN) TRE 270 XA. The accident occurred around 2:00 am on Sunday morning when a group of Fulani herdsmen were rearing their cattle along the expressway at Obada Oko in the Ewekoro local government area of the state. Our correspondent gathered that the driver of the sand filled Austin tipper truck only sighted the herdsmen and their cattle on the expressway at the last minute and while attempting to apply his break he lost control. Doyin Okupe, former special assistant to former Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo on (Media & Publicity) has blasted Senator Buruji Kashamu labeling him a “political impostor”. According to Okupe, he blasted Kashamu for misrepresenting the southwest chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over what geopolitical zone presents the next national chairman of the party. “There is an embarrassing falsehood being propagated by political charlatans from the southwest and some influential collaborators in the top echelon of the PDP,” he wrote on his Facebook page. Papa Wemba, one of Africa’s most popular musicians, is dead. The influential Congolese Soukous singer died after collapsing on stage in Abidjan, Cote D’ivore. According to reports, the 66-year old musician suffered seizure, slumped on the floor while his dancers and band members continued to perform unaware of what is happening. He was born Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba in 14 June 1949 in Lubefu, Democratic Republic of The Congo. At age 20 in 1069, he became one of the very first musicians to join the influential Soukous Band, Zaiko Langa Langa, when it was created in December of that year in Kinshasa along with such well known Congolese musicians as Nyoka Longo Jossart, Manuaku Pepe Felly, Evoloko Lay Lay, Bimi Ombale, Teddy Sukami, Zamuangana Enock, Mavuela Simeon, Clan Petrole and others. A group, Vanguard for Credible Representation, has petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, over alleged misappropriation of N852, 936,713.92 counterpart fund belonging to the Ekiti State under the Dr. Kayode Fayemi administration. Fayemi is the currently the Minister of Solid Minerals and the group allege that the counterpart fund was meant for the Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, in the state. In a petition dated March 3, 2016, signed by its Chairman, Comrade Akinloye Oyeniyi, and made available to journalists by Lere Olayinka, the spokesman to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state, the group alleged that as governor of Ekiti State, Fayemi, in contravention of Section 11(2) of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Act, 2004 authorised the illegal withdrawal of the a sum of N852, 936,713.92 from SUBEB Access Bank Account Number 0065385694 on October 8, 2014, eight days to the end of his tenure. NNPC, NUPENG partner on fuel supply

BUSINESS - Following the decision of the Federal Government to deliver 1,120 trucks of fuel (approximately 36million litres of fuel) in the country, the government through the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has collaborated with the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) to ensure even distribution of the product. The National Chairman, Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) unit at NUPENG, Comrade Akanni Oladiti, dropped this hint during a chat with The Nation in Lagos at the weekend. He said the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, initiated the partnership, by inviting the leadership of PTD for a meeting in Abuja on the issue two weeks ago. He said the meeting discussed modalities on how to distribute fuel in the country, while at the same time, proffering solution to bottlenecks hindering fuel supply nationwide. Nigeria: Police arrest robbers wearing hijab in Niger

The Niger State Police Command has arrested a six-man gang for robbing houses disguised as Muslim women. It was gathered that one of the tactics of the gang was for one of the gang members to don a hijab in order to observe the house which they intended to rob. A police source told our correspondent that the surveillance was done to know when the occupants would leave and come back home before carrying out the operation. Armed with this information, the source said, the gang would dispatch the gang member dressed in hijab to the residence. The ‘woman’ would force the door open and later invite other members of the gang to the place after which they would remove all movable property in the house. A competent source close to the Niger State Police command informed SUNDAY PUNCH in Minna that the syndicate was apprehended last week after members of the gang entered a house in the Dutsen Kura area of the state capital.

Hacker Hamza Bendelladj sentenced to 15 years

USA - Algerian hacker and developer of malicious SpyEye malware Hamza Bendelladj has been sentenced by a US court to 15 years in prison and three years of supervised release on charges related to his role in developing and distributing the virus. Bendelladj, 27, had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to commit wire and bank fraud, 10 counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiring to commit computer fraud and abuse, and 11 counts of computer fraud and abuse. He had faced 60 years prison and a $24m fine. Bendelladj's court-appointed attorney, Jay L. Strongwater of Atlanta, told Al Jazeera that his client pleaded guilty and accepted responsibility for his actions. His crimes are estimated to have cost at least $100m. Bendelladj and codefendant Russian Aleksandr Andreevich Panin formed a computer-hacking crime ring that set out to steal money from bank accounts of individuals and institutions by infecting millions of computers in the US.
