Tupac Shakur’s mum, Afeni, dies at 69

MOTHER  of Tupac Shakur, one of hip-hop’s most seminal and iconic figures, Afeni Shakur Davis, has died at 69, the Marin County, California, sheriff’s office said yesterday. Though she is best known as Tupac Shakur’s mom, she was also a Black Panther as a young adult and an activist and philanthropist in her later years. Deputies responded to a family member’s call reporting “a possible cardiac arrest” at Shakur Davis’ Sausalito home around 9:34 p.m. Monday, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said. Shakur Davis was taken to Marin General Hospital where she died at 10:28 p.m., the office said. “There was nothing suspicious about her death and there’s no evidence of foul play,” Lt. Doug Pittman said in a news conference yesterday afternoon. “Sheriff’s Coroners Office will lead investigation to determine exact cause & manner of Afeni Shakur’s death,” the office said in a tweet. A former Lagos State Sports Commissioner, Ademola Adeniji-Adele, has died Family sources told the media early on Thursday that Mr. Adeniji-Adele passed away in India where he had gone for a medical check-up after developing some complications. He was 60. An official of Lagos State government confirmed the development     and said the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, was preparing to announce it to the people of the state. Mr. Adeniji-Adele served as commissioner between 2007 and 2011 during the first tenure of former Governor Tunde Fashola. New study alleges unsafe chemicals use in Nigeria’s beauty salons

A new study released by researchers has alleged that dangerous toxic chemicals in cosmetics are widely used in salons and beauty parlours despite their attendant health effects in disruption of nervous, respiratory, reproductive systems and lungs, kidney damage and inflammation of the skin and eyes to both salon workers and users alike. The study by Sustainable Research and Action for Environmental Development (SRADev Nigeria) under the auspice of Developing World Outreach Initiatives (DWOI), USA, noted that a very high proportion of the workers do not make use of Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) when at work or while handling cosmetics. The study in Lagos to assess “safe cosmetic use by occupational workers of salons and beauty parlours on 29 shops from 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) showed that all the shops regularly make use of cosmetic products containing particularly the “Toxic Trio” – a group of chemicals (toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate) which are in

Court jails men who beat up former interim president

A  Malian  court has sentenced two men to five years in jail for beating up  Mali's  former interim president,  Dioncounda Traore , during the occupation of his palace in May 2012 by protesters demanding he resign, the Justice Minister said on Wednesday. The court on Tuesday acquitted a third man of involvement in the attack, which followed a military coup that allowed separatists and Islamists to take control of parts of northern Mali. The two men were convicted of charges including criminal conspiracy and attempted assassination, Justice Minister Sanogo Aminata Malle said in a statement. Traore was hospitalized in France for two months before coming back to Mali. He later authorized a foreign military intervention to oust Islamist militants who threatened Bamako, before handing over power to President  Ibrahim Boubacar Keita  in September 2013.

S'African Parliament throws out EFF members for blocking Zuma

Politicians from South African opposition party have been removed from parliament after they tried to block President Jacob Zuma from speaking. The speaker ordered security officers to throw the left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MPs out after they heckled and chanted "Zuma leave the house" during his first appearance in parliament since two damning court rulings against him. This follows the ruling of a South African court that Zuma should be charged with corruption. The case is related to a multi-billion dollar arms deal the government negotiated in 1999 but Zuma denies any wrongdoing, and says he will continue to "shepherd" the nation. His term is due to end in 2019.

Madagascar hunts for 37 inmates after Prison break

Security agencies in Madagascar are on the hunt for at least 37 inmates who fled after a prison break in the south-western regional capital of Toliara Six of the inmates were arrested few hours after they staged the daring escape, during a work boycott by the prison staff, which started last week. The Malagasy prisons workers' union reiterated in Anta-nana-rivo their determination to continue with the strike until the government addresses their concerns, which include a demand for higher salaries and improved working conditions. The last prison break in Madagascar happened in 2009.
