The Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has declared the arrest and detention of member representing Efon Constituency1 in the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Afolabi Akanni, by the Department of State Services, DSS, as illegal. Consequently, the Court ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to compensate Akanni with a sum of N5 million. Akanni was on March 4 whisked away in an alleged invasion of the Ekiti State House of Assembly complex by operatives of the DSS. He was held at the DSS headquarters in Abuja for 18 days in defiance of the federal high court, Ado Ekiti's order for his release on March 8. Counsel to Akanni, Barrister Obafemi Adewale, who appeared for him in court, yesterday, alongside other members of his legal team, apologised for his absence and told the judge, Justice Taiwo Taiwo, that he (Akanni) was recuperating from the post-traumatic treatment at an undisclosed hospital outside the state. Indonesian National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has nabbed a Nigerian woman on charges of drug trafficking following a tip-off from the public. The 36-year-old suspect, identified by her initials LN, was arrested in Dagen area, Yogyakarta on Wednesday, April 20. “The case came to the light after we received a tip-off from members of the public that there would be a drug related transaction at a hotel in Yogyakarta,” BNN Chief Commissioner General Budi Waseso said. BNN sent its officer to monitor the hotel and found a person suspected of carrying drugs leaving the hotel for Jakarta by train. A mass child marriage ceremony in India has been captured on camera – showing young brides crying as they are forced to wed. The heartbreaking video was taken in Chittorgarh, a city in Rajasthan, northern India, a state in the country that is prevalent for child marriages. The Department of State Security (DSS) Wednesday arraigned two artisans before an Isolo Magistrate Court for allegedly cloning the mobile line of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode. The suspects – Rilwanu Jamiu and Balogun Stanley Oyewole, who claimed to be a cocoa dealer, were said to have attempted to perfect a N50 million transfer with the said mobile line. Prosecuting counsel from the DSS, Mr. Peter Okerinmodun told Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo that the suspects were arrested after using the cloned mobile line of the Governor to send a text message to the Accountant General of the State requesting for transfer of N50 million. He said the suspects conspired with others now at large to commit the crime on February 10, 2016 at about 10:02hours. The United States has announced it will give $40 million in humanitarian assistance to countries bordering Lake Chad fighting Islamist militant group Boko Haram, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said on Tuesday. The money is to help about seven million people affected by the insurgent group that has killed around 15,000 people. It takes total U.S. aid to the sub-region since 2014 to $237 million.
