President Muhammadu Buhari signs the 2016 Budget

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the the 2016 appropriation Act into law. Mr. Buhari signed the budget in the presence of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, in his office at the presidential villa Abuja. Others who witnessed the budget signing ceremony were the national chairman of the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, John Odigie-Oyegun and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal. The 2016 budget estimates suffered several delays after claims and counter claims from both the legislature and executive arms, each accusing the other of padding the budget. Mr. Buhari returned the budget to the National Assembly, saying key projects were removed and others not in the estimates he submitted were added. Ethiopia bans smoking at public gatherings

The Ethiopian Government has placed a ban on smoking at public gatherings. This new law makes smoking illegal in bars, cafés, restaurants, schools, hospitals and stadiums as well as cultural and religious events, but smoking on the streets is still permitted. Tobacco advertising is also banned, according to local media. Offenders will face a fine of 2,000 Ethiopian biir - that's about $92, rising to 2,500 Birr or $116 for smokers who send children under the age of 18 to buy cigarettes for them.

Troops kill 31 cattle rustlers, B’Haram members

The troops of the Nigerian Army have killed 18 cattle rustlers with several others injured in an operation in Zamfara State. Also, the military on Thursday said that 13 members of the Boko Haram insurgents were killed in the ongoing clampdown on Sambisa Forest, the sect’s hideout in Borno State. The acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Thursday that the troops of 223 Battalion, 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, who were on patrol, carried out the attack when they were alerted to the presence of the bandits in the area. He said that the troops averted what would have been an attack on Dansadau community by the cattle rustlers and armed bandits. Abduction of UNICAL staff: Kidnappers demand N60m ransom

KIDNAPPERS  of the University of Calabar staff have demanded N60 million as ransom from the family members. Two staff of UNICAL, Mrs Ndifon and Dr. David Ini Ama (nurse and medical doctor) respectively with UCTH as well as the little daughter of Mrs Ndifon were, on Monday, abducted by gunmen. The kidnappers were said to have stormed the university staff quarters in a speedboat, opened fire and later whisked away their victims through the Obufa Esuk River adjoining the staff quarters at about 8.00pm. But 48 hours after, the abductors demanded N60 million before the three of them could be released. Investigations by Daily Sun revealed that the kidnappers called yesterday demanding that each of the two families should pay N30 million as ransom to secure their release. ‘Give me N5m or I die,’ says man who attempted suicide

A  Cameroonian who attempted suicide by climbing electric pole in Lekki area of Lagos, yesterday, shocked residents when he demanded for N5 million or he would kill himself. According to witnesses, when persuaded to come down from the PHCN pole, the Cameroonian, Frederic Gino, told the bewildered onlookers that he would only climb down if he got N5 million. Daily Sun  gathered that Gino had climbed  the electric pole in attempt to commit suicide, at Adebisi Ogunniyi Crescent, Lekki Phase 1. According to eye witnesses, the man had been on the pole as early 5:30am and all efforts by the community to bring him down proved abortive. He was, however, rescued by officials of Lagos State Emergency Agency in collaboration with officials of the state Fire Service. The man sustained injury during the rescue attempt and was immediately taken to Oba Yekini Eleguishi Health Centre, Lekki Phase 1.
