Arsene Wenger says Arsenal are still a match for rivals Tottenham

Image
Arsene Wenger has dismissed suggestions Arsenal have already fallen behind Tottenham in North London's balance of power and believes his young team will improve next season. The Gunners remain six points behind second-placed Spurs, albeit with a game in hand, and are widely considered to be out of the race for this season's Premier League title. "First of all, we are not behind yet," he said ahead of  his side's  Super Sunday  game with Crystal Palace "Tottenham have been 18 years behind us, they survived you know, so let's be realistic. "If Leicester win on Sunday, it doesn't change the fact that we have absolutely to win our game. Let's prepare for that, no matter what the result of Leicester is. "Leicester can still drop points on Sunday [at home to West Ham in the opening match of  Super Sunday. "You need to keep a core of players and strengthen where we can, but the team is going the right way. It's at the ...

I Lost My Mother-In-Law Because There Was No Pedestrian Bridge – Desmond Elliot

Image
Popular Nollywood actor and member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot, on Monday told his contemporaries at the Assembly that he lost his mother-in-law for the reason that there were no pedestrian bridges across an expressway in Lagos. He did not reveal the particular expressway or when the incident occurred, but said his mother-in-law was hit while she was trying to cross the expressway on her return from the Daleko market in the Mushin area of Lagos where she had gone to buy foodstuff. Elliot was arguing in favour of a motion to call on the Federal Government to provide a pedestrian bridge at Toyota Bus Stop along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. The House also called on the Lagos state government to provide palliatives in the form of road signs and zebra crossings on strategic areas of the road and ensure compliance by motorists. The motion was moved by Jude Idimogu, the representative of Oshodi Constitue...

Eden Hazard:In a dark place - Guus Hiddink

Image
Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard is in a "dark" place, according to interim manager Guus Hiddink. Hazard, 25, was named PFA Players' Player of the Year as Chelsea won the Premier League last term but is yet to score a league goal this season. "Last year everything was beautiful and this year everything is, for him, dark. The contrast is huge," said Hiddink. "He was the number one and now he's at the end of a long row of players. That's difficult. What do you do?" Belgium international Hazard, who has four years left on his contract at Stamford Bridge but has been strongly linked with a move away from the club, will miss Saturday's home game against Manchester City through injury. "The next period will be very interesting for him," added Hiddink. "Not now, just this season, but also the Euros and the upcoming season. "If he is planning (to move) in his career, then he must show it where he is playing now an...

Buhari, Emefiele Sign Currency Deal With China, an Act to Crash Dependence on The US Dollar

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele moved closer to actualizing their promise to strengthen the naira against the United States dollars by signing a landmark currency deal with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd on Tuesday in Beijing, China. The agreement will allow Nigerian traders and businesses, which imports mainly from China conclude their transactions in the Chinese currency, the Renminbi (Yuan), instead of the dollar. The new agreement would see Nigeria-China trades, which accounts for over 70 percent of imports into Nigeria, concluded in the Yuan. Until now over 90 percent of international trades between Nigeria and the world is done in dollars, and in the process putting so much pressure on the naira. Arsenal need to learn Leicester's 'will to win,' says Ian Wright

Image
That never-say-die spirit arguably helps explain why Leicester have won five of their last seven matches by a 1-0 scoreline. "How many times have I said to you about 1-0?" posed managerial great Sir Alex Ferguson after one such victory four years ago for his Manchester United team. "It means championship form. "I don't mind the 1-0s, I really don't. It tells you we are determined, we're going to defend, do the right things and play as a team." These days, Arsène Wenger's Arsenal teams are a very different proposition. Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has previously described their style of football as "like an orchestra." If it's a brand of football that frequently stirs the soul, Wright says Arsenal could learn a thing or two from Leicester's title tilt. "It's their determination and their will to win -- the fact they seem to be playing with an unbelievable team spirit," Wright told CNN. "You ...

Chelsea will make Oscar available for transfer this summer

Image
Chelsea  have decided to make Oscar available for transfer this summer, in order to raise funds for an overhaul of the squad. The Brazil international, according to  The Times , is regarded as the most dispensable of the club’s saleable assets. Roman Abramovich is keen to stick by the club’s current transfer policy of selling before buying and it seems Oscar, who has failed to develop at the rate Chelsea might have hoped after signing him from Internacional back in 2012, is not in the plans of Antonio Conte. The Italian coach, who was confirmed as Chelsea’s next manager last week, reportedly wants to sign a new creative midfield player while retaining the services of Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Willian. The Times understand that Conte also wants to bring Juan Cuadrado back to Stamford Bridge from Juventus, where he has impressed during his season-long loan spell. OSCAR FAILS TO PERFORM CONSISTENTLY Oscar was tipped to become one of Europe’s best playmak...

Premier League must not become 'NBA of football', says La Liga president

Image
Spain's top flight must close the financial gap on the Premier League to stop it becoming "the NBA of football", says La Liga president Javier Tebas. In the 2013-14 season the Premier League  generated income of £3.26bn, compared to £1.51bn for La Liga. "We hope to grow so the Premier League does not become the biggest competition in the world and we can be at the same level economically," said Tebas. "We do not want the Premier League as a leader one step ahead of the rest." The United States' NBA is widely considered to be the leading global basketball competition and attracts the best players from the across the world. Tebas, a 53-year-old lawyer, told BBC Sport: "If we fail to do this [compete economically], the Premier League could become the NBA of football and that would not be good not for us, not for the sport. "We plan to work harder in the TV rights market and in the sponsorship market to get more money....

Denying a goalscoring opportunity: Red card rule relaxed by IFAB

Image
Arsenal's Per Mertesacker (left) was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity in the Premier League match against Chelsea in January Players who commit a foul to deny a goalscoring opportunity will no longer automatically be sent off, football's rule-making body has confirmed. The previous 'triple-punishment' rule required a red card - and therefore a suspension - as well as the award of a penalty under those circumstances. However, players committing accidental fouls that deny a goalscoring chance will now be cautioned instead. But deliberate fouls will still incur a red card. Those include holding, pulling or pushing, not playing the ball, serious foul play, violent conduct or deliberate handball in order to deny a goalscoring opportunity. The change has been ratified by the  International Football Association Board (IFAB)  - a body made up of the four British football associations and Fifa - which decides on changes to the Laws of the Game. ...
