400 dead' in migrant tragedy as ship capsizes off Egypt


President of Italy Sergio Matterella confirmed 400 refugees died after boats which capsized near the Egyptian coast as they attempted to sail to Europe.
Most of the migrants were fleeing Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea and had hoped to reach Italy.
But the boats capsized this morning in the latest migrant tragedy.
Rescue workers were only able to save 29 passengers, it is understood.
In a separate incident six bodies were recovered and 108 migrants were rescued from a semi-submerged rubber dinghy off the coast of Italy earlier today.
